Learn to Skate Instructor

Job Description:

As an Independent Contractor under general supervision, provide ice skating instruction following the United States Figure Skating Association’s Learn to Skate USA program. The Instructor is responsible for increasing Learn to Skate customer-base and promoting other GCCC and affiliate skating programs. The mission of the Learn to Skate Program is to provide a goal-oriented program that encourages ice skating at all levels and to enhance the quality of skating skills at these levels. Instructor works to ensure that participants have a positive experience and are performing the skills in a safe manner as set out in the established program.


Program Objectives:

  • provide a fun and safe skating experience for the beginner as well as the more advanced skater
  • teach correct technique of the simple basic elements
  • enable everyone involved to achieve the skills necessary to make it a lifetime skill or to move competently into other skating levels and programs

This program runs current with GCCC ice season: approximately September to April each season.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • USFS Instructor Certification and knowledge of USFS Learn to Skate program
  • Previous coaching/teaching in skating program preferred, but not necessary
  • Skill in managing large groups of skaters (i.e. youth / mixed ages)
  • Energy, assertiveness, initiative, creativity, and willingness to try new approaches and techniques
  • Works well as a member of a team


Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare lesson plans and required equipment in advance of lessons
  • Communicate regularly with parents on all program details and skating progression at beginning, end and throughout class and season
  • Provide ice skating instruction to youth according to the United States Figure Skating Associations Learn to Skate curriculum
  • Evaluate students on testing day of class and complete forms required by program
  • Aiding the Program Director in other duties as assigned or delegated
