Major Capital Campaign Announcement
May 15, 2018  Press Release:

Greater Canandaigua Civic Center launches first major capital campaign

The 26-year-old not-for-profit plans a major expansion and improvements to its facility.

The Greater Canandaigua Civic Center announced its first major capital campaign with a goal of $861,500 for expansion and improvements to the facility.

"Today begins the next 26 years of our not-for-profit organization, which has been providing event space to the residents of Ontario County," said Kyle Johnson, Board President. "For 26 years, the Civic Center has been a fixture in the Ontario County area providing seasonal ice time and year-round event space for hundreds of community activities."

The campaign launches after Dave Spiehler, Director of Development, talked to a former Canandaigua resident wanting to help the Civic Center maintain its significance to families in the area.

"I told him that we have a long list of needs, from locker room and bathroom improvements, more meeting rooms, a new Zamboni ice resurfacer and upgrades to our year-round event space all with a total cost approaching $1 million. He said 'OK, let's do them all.’”

The anonymous donor pledged a $500,000 gift to the total cost of the work. “He then told me to get busy and raise the balance of the money from the community,” said Spiehler.

Executive Director David Korpiel said that many people in the community aren’t aware of the Civic Center’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.

“The Civic Center is a community asset and with 26 years since our opening we are ready for some major upgrades,” he said. “Our fiscally responsible Board and management team have run a cash positive and debt free not-for-profit organization. We are well positioned for this fundraising initiative.”

The Civic Center serves more than 45,000 visitors each year from throughout Ontario County. The organization plans to begin improvements in September 2018.

"In addition to the $500,000 pledge, we are asking the community, businesses and individuals to support this effort to raise the additional $361,500," Korpiel added.
